System Navigation Support: Family Resource Centers

Family Resource Centers enhance the development of strong communities through support for parents and caregivers. They are family-focused, culturally responsive hubs that offer resources based on the needs and interests of families. Services provided at these centers include home visiting, developmental screening, parent skill training, child care and literacy support, job training, and more.

System Navigation Support: Coordinated Family and Community Engagement (CFCE) Networks

CFCE networks are local programs that offer child development services and referrals, such as administering ASQ screeners and hosting play groups for young children. They also provide resources to parents/caregivers such as parent education, child development information, transitional assistance, parent leadership opportunities, and community resources to support parents as their child’s first teacher.

System Navigation Support: Children’s Trust Family Centers

Family Centers are community hubs that support parents with navigating parenting. Here they can get access to resources, learn new skills, meet other families, and participate in a variety of programming. There are currently 7 Family Centers in MA, including one SAFE Child Community Site, through the Children’s Trust.

Play Groups and Baby Classes

Both formal and informal groups provide children with socialization, play, learning opportunities, and more before they are old enough for school. Parents also benefit greatly from play groups and baby classes, where they can meet with peers and build networks of support.

Equity Considerations
Often, community offerings are not inclusive of or accessible to all community members. Language accessibility, cross-cultural offerings, and hiring diverse staff to work in these spaces can help families feel more welcome, safe, and included in the community. For example, ensuring that libraries have books and information in the most common languages within the community (as well as program staff who speak those languages), that outdoor spaces are accessible for individuals of all abilities, and that community events are free to attend, all families and young children tap into the resources in their community. Further, digital equity gaps, in terms of access, use, and training for technology, may preclude community members from engaging with virtual offerings.
